Google URL Shortener No Longer Available: What It Means for Your SEO Strategy

For a long time, Google URL Shortener (goo.gl) has been a reliable tool for shortening lengthy URLs into short and manageable links. However, in March 2019, Google officially discontinues its URL shortener. Eventhough the function has been killed off, all existing links at that time would still be redirected to the intended destination.

But as of August 25th, 2024 onwards, all “goo.gl” links will start showing an interstitial page showing users that “This link will no longer work in the future”. This message will appear for a percentage of users as the official kill off date gets closer.

All Google URL Shortener links will stop working on August 25th, 2025 and will simply respond with a 404 error page. Although there’s still a year’s time before the entire function shuts down, Google is encouraging users to update their links as soon as possible as the interstitial page may cause disruptions to link redirections.

The Impact on Digital Marketing and SEO

For businesses and SEO agencies that relied heavily on goo.gl, this discontinuation will bring about several challenges and a shift in strategy. Here’s how it will impact your digital marketing and SEO efforts:

  1. Link Management: Businesses need to find a new URL shortener to manage their links. This transition can be quite troublesome and tedious, especially for those with numerous existing goo.gl links.
  2. Analytics: Losing access to goo.gl’s analytics means finding an alternative that offers comparable or better tracking capabilities.
  3. Brand Trust: Transitioning to a new service can affect the trust of users who intend to click on your links, especially if the new service is less recognized.

Adapting to Change

The discontinuation of Google URL Shortener doesn’t mean the end of the URL shortening world. There are still other reliable URL Shortener option out there that can fill the void. Here are some alternatives to consider:

  1. Bitly: One of the most popular URL shorteners, Bitly offers robust analytics and customization options. Thus making it an excellent choice for any SEO agency.
  2. TinyURL: This service provides simple and effective URL shortening without the need for an account.
  3. Rebrandly: Known for its custom-branded links. Rebrandly is ideal for businesses looking to maintain their brand identity even in shortened URLs.
  4. Ow.ly: Integrated with Hootsuite, Ow.ly is perfect for social media managers. Shorten and track links directly within their social media management platform.

Best Practices for Using URL Shorteners

When incorporating URL shorteners into your digital marketing strategy, consider the following best practices to maximize effectiveness:

  1. Choose a Reliable Service: Ensure the URL shortener you choose is reputable and offers strong analytics like the ones we’ve mentioned above.
  2. Customize Your Links: If possible, use custom-branded short links to maintain brand consistency and trust.
  3. Monitor Analytics: Regularly check the analytics provided by the URL shortener to understand the performance of your links and adjust your strategy accordingly.
  4. Avoid Overuse: While URL shorteners are useful, overusing them can make your content look spammy. Use them wisely.
